The State of Georgia maintains full-time representation in a dozen international markets.

With a diverse economic landscape and robust infrastructure, the Peach State offers a compelling environment for companies across multiple industries. The Georgia Department of Economic Development and its economic development partners capitalized on the 2024 SelectUSA Investment Summit to demonstrate why Georgia stands out to international companies seeking to locate or expand in the U.S.

Here are three industries that have put Georgia on the map for international business recruitment and trade.

1. E-Mobility: A Thriving Hub for Innovation

Georgia has emerged as a leader in the e-mobility sector, with more than $27.3 billion in investments since 2018, creating over 32,200 new jobs. This growth is driven by a dynamic ecosystem of e-mobility and battery supply chain companies:

  • Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs): Major players like Kia, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), Rivian, and Archer Aviation are making significant investments.

  • Battery Manufacturers: Companies such as SK Battery America and LG Energy Solution are at the forefront of battery innovation.

  • Recyclers and Fuel Cell Manufacturers: Aurubis AG, Ascend Elements, and Plug Power are advancing recycling and hydrogen fuel technologies.

Georgia’s strong foundations in mobility are anchored by its aerospace and automotive sectors. The state’s traditional automotive sector also continues to thrive, with exports reaching $4.1 billion in 2023. The Georgia Ports Authority’s Brunswick facility is the second-busiest automotive Roll-on/Roll-off port in the U.S., reinforcing Georgia’s strategic position in the automotive and e-mobility supply chains.

2. Aerospace & Defense: Exploring New Heights

Aerospace and defense products are Georgia’s top export, totaling $11.1 billion in 2023, and the state ranks fifth in aerospace exports in the U.S. In 2023 alone, aerospace investments in Georgia surpassed $500 million. Notable companies in this sector include:

  • Aerospace Giants: Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and Embraer are key contributors.

  • Innovative Startups: Companies like Archer Aviation and Hermeus are pushing the boundaries of urban air mobility and advanced aerospace technologies.

  • Defense Leaders: Anduril Industries and Northrop Grumman are driving advancements in defense technology.

The state’s appeal is further enhanced by its affordable cost of doing business, available sites, and robust workforce pipeline from institutions like the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia. The Georgia Center of Innovation supports these sectors with industry-specific expertise and strategic partnerships, reinforcing Georgia’s position as a hub for aerospace and defense innovation.

3. Agribusiness, Food Processing: Cornerstones of Georgia’s Economy

Georgia ranks among the Top 10 U.S. states for food processing GDP, contributing over $11 billion to the state’s economy. The state’s agricultural dominance and food processing capabilities attract global giants:

  • Major companies such as Pilgrim’s, Chick-fil-A, The Coca-Cola Company, Yakult, Nestlé, and Ferrero are key players in Georgia’s food processing industry.

  • Baked goods are prepared fresh daily at King’s Hawaiian and CJ Foodville.

  • Companies like Local Bounti and Pure Flavor are leading advancements in controlled environment agriculture (CEA), significantly reducing land and water use.

Georgia’s food processing industry benefits from the eighth-largest refrigerated capacity space in the U.S., positioning it for continued growth. And with 22 technical colleges across the state, Georgia ensures a steady, skilled workforce pipeline.

Georgia’s agricultural legacy, including leading production in peanuts, pecans, and poultry, complements its food processing and AgTech sectors, making the state a critical player in the global food supply chain.
