College of Coastal Georgia nursing students are showing their support and care for the community by partnering with America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and Bay Harbour Church of God to host a health fair on Monday, November 18. The health fair will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Bay Harbour Church during its monthly food distribution event. Bay Harbour Church works with Second Harvest to distribute meals to between 200-500 people in the community. Event attendees will have the opportunity to get a free health assessment as they receive food.

The health fair will feature stations addressing various health topics such as smoking cessation, blood pressure education, and how to eat healthy on a budget. Students will perform skin checks, blood pressure screenings, and health assessments with action plans for each individual based on their findings. The students will also provide referrals for follow-ups with healthcare facilities and providers at either a free or reduced cost.

The health fair also serves as a service-learning project for nursing students' Health Assessment and Promotion course at the College. Service-learning courses allow students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations. The College partners with local agencies and organizations to address a community need, while simultaneously reinforcing what students have learned. After the health fair, students will evaluate their knowledge of the community, confidence in what they've learned, and the benefits of the project for education and personal growth.
