In August 2024, Southeast Georgia Health System will welcome cardiologist Michael B. Omar, MD, to its Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Cardiology practice. Although Omar interviewed with several other cardiology practices over the past year, he was “immediately” impressed with SGPA-Cardiology’s “family-like feeling” which complements his own approach to patient care. “I believe in treating each patient as I would a family member. It was apparent from my first visit that the SGPA-Cardiology team has values similar to mine. In addition, they have served the community for many years and built significant patient trust. That speaks volumes.”
As far back as he can recall, Omar has been passionate about medicine. “I never entertained anything else. I’ve always found fulfillment in healing and serving people.” He found cardiology appealing because, “You can help the broadest range of patients because heart disease is so prevalent. I want to be part of the frontier bringing new treatments and technologies to our patients.”
After earning a medical degree from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, he served as a medical intern at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital in Trinidad. He then completed residency training at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine, where he received several awards for research and was named Outstanding Intern, followed by Senior Resident of the Year. He completed a cardiovascular disease fellowship at UF, serving as chief cardiology fellow during his tenure. In 2024, Omar was awarded by the University for his Outstanding Quality and Patient Safety, Distinguished Professionalism, and was named Fellow of the Year.
Omar will focus on preventative care, treating patients with heart failure, atrial fibrillation and performing echocardiography. “Echocardiography looks at the inside of the heart to assess cardiovascular health,” Omar says. He is especially interested in preventative care for patients with a family history of heart disease, “We’re learning so much about predictive genetics and modifiable risk factors and that it’s never too early to make meaningful lifestyle changes. Why not get in front of it?”
He looks forward to joining the Health System family and says patients can expect a physician who listens. “That’s the biggest thing. Patients appreciate it when we take time to listen. I like making a difference in their lives and putting a smile on their faces.”
When not practicing medicine, Omar enjoys spending time with his wife as well as playing soccer and basketball.
Omar joins a seven-member team of providers at Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Cardiology, with offices in Brunswick and St. Marys, and is currently accepting new patients. To schedule an appointment with Omar, call 912-466-7660.
