The Golden Isles branch of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia announced a new partnership with SOAR, (Social Opportunities & Active Recreation, Inc.) a local nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities in Glynn and McIntosh Counties. The collaboration will expand access to health and wellness programs, while promoting a sense of belonging and inclusion in the community.

SOAR’s Adult Health and Wellness Club will provide a crucial opportunity for adults with developmental disabilities, who often face higher rates of chronic conditions, mental health challenges, and social isolation. Through the YMCA’s welcoming environment, participants will experience an exciting, nurturing space where they can engage with peers while learning new skills.

“The agreement with SOAR is particularly exciting for me as SOAR is going to be one of the YMCA's key strategic partners,” said Will Gunther, executive director of the Golden Isles YMCA. “We want to be for all. We are going to do everything in our power to go out of our way to build the most warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment possible so that everyone in our community, regardless of their background, can come to the YMCA and learn, grow, and thrive together.”

SOAR’s mission aligns with the YMCA’s commitment to building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. As one of the area’s top providers of health and wellness programming for individuals with developmental disabilities, SOAR’s Adult Health and Wellness program will now be hosted at the Golden Isles YMCA. This partnership will offer participants the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities such as stretching, exercise, and sports games, all designed to enhance overall fitness and well-being.

“SOAR’s leadership staff and its Adult Health & Wellness participants are very excited to be back operating out of the YMCA,” said Jane Christian, executive director of SOAR. “It provides the perfect venue for SOAR’s Adult Health & Wellness program due to access to exercise equipment, the gym and a large activity room.”

In addition to activities like pickleball, stretching, sports, and games, SOAR is aiming to expand its offerings at the YMCA, including swim activities for its adult participants. With the only indoor pool in the area, the Golden Isles YMCA is a perfect spot for SOAR’s aquatic activities.

Christian said one SOAR member summed it up perfectly: “‘It made me really happy to be back at the Y.  I played kickball with my friends for the first time in a while! It’s one of our favorite games.’”

By operating out of the Y, SOAR is able to offer a multitude of activities that improve physical fitness and foster meaningful connections with peers. Christian said gathering with peers for SOAR’s activities promotes a sense of belonging, reduces isolation, and ultimately leads to improved mental health.

“The YMCA of Coastal Georgia and SOAR could not be more thankful or excited to work together,” said Gunther. “We ask that the community continues to financially support both organizations through tax-exempt donations as well as participation in memberships and programs. Together, both of our organizations will only grow stronger and better achieve our collective missions to enhance the Golden Isles community.”
