Georgia Farmers to Face Costly Season, but Jones Act Waiver Could Offer Some Temporary Relief

 Georgia farmers are entering one of the most expensive growing seasons in recent years, with rising fuel and fertilizer costs adding pressure during a critical time for crops. But a temporary federal policy may offer some relief.

On March 18, the Trump administration issued a 60-day waiver of the Jones Act, a 1920 law that normally requires goods moving between U.S. ports to be transported on American-built, American-flagged, and American-crewed ships. Under the waiver, foreign-flagged vessels can now transport fuel, fertilizers, and other goods between U.S. ports, aiming to ease supply pressures caused by the ongoing conflict with Iran.
